Big Miles in the rain…for ponies and pizza!
I’ve been looking forward to seeing a lot of sections of the AT again, but the Mt Rogers State Rec area is high on that list…rolling hills, wild ponies…what isn’t to love? They say this area recalls the rolling grasslands of Montana, but having hiked the CDT out there, I say I much prefer the beauty of Virginia. I had such a fantastic time seeing it all again, and Will caught up to me, so I had my friend back!
We met Craig from Germany and had a fun conversation with him. Will said he was wondering where I would end up tonight and decided it would be Partnership shelter, and he was totally right—Partnership with its pizza and shower were my destination.
We had a great long walk until it started raining and getting super cold. Neither of us wanted to stop because we wanted to make Parntership and its pizza. By the time I got there, I had to quickly put on warm stuff and was starving.
It took an hour of waiting in the cold for the pizza to arrive, but it finally did, and Will and I ate the 2 large pizzas, and family sized order of cinnamon rolls in the vestibule at the shelter while everyone else was sleeping. Oh well. I spent way more money than I had planned and my feet hurt, but after doing the CDT, I do not take for granted the opportunity to call pizza and have it delivered to the trail.
